The Building Industry HIA Name and Shame Campaign (N&SC) is a unique crime prevention initiative that was instigated by the building industry in 2002 following consultations between Meridian Services, Perth’s major building companies and the Housing Industry Association.
Meridian Investigators have worked alongside Police to identify offenders. This has been achieved through the use of GPS tracking devices and the use of covert surveillance of offenders. Meridian assists in the gathering of evidence and apprehension of suspects and has also assisted with roadside traffic stops in identified high crime building site areas. Our roles in assisting police have been documented in Police operational orders and within the media.
The N&SC was independently evaluated by the the Crime Research Centre, University of Western Australia on behalf of the Office Of Crime Prevention. The tabled report identified the N&SC as an excellent program that could be modelled to include other industry groups. The campaign received a Certificate of Merit at the 2008 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards. The evaluation recognized Meridian Services as a one of the major strengths of the campaign.
Meridian Services now coordinates and manages all investigations involving crime and illegal rubbish dumping on sites of our campaign members. Meridian Services has Memorandum of Understandings with WA Police and the vast majority of metropolitan local councils to assist in combating the issues faced by the building industry. Meridian staff are authorised to issue illegal rubbish infringements on behalf of the City of Wanneroo and Gosnells.
